New Weather Radar in Maan Supports Early Warning System

Khaberni - The Meteorological Department continues to enhance the national early warning system and increase the kingdom's readiness to handle extreme weather phenomena, through the construction of a modern weather radar in the Al-Haisha area in Ma'an governorate, which is considered one of the strategic projects supporting climate security and public safety.

The Director General of the department, Raed Al-Khattab, stated that the project is part of the department's vision to develop the infrastructure for meteorological monitoring and to update early warning and monitoring systems according to the latest global standards. This contributes to enhancing the ability to accurately and efficiently monitor and follow different weather conditions.

He added that the technical and field studies for the project have been fully completed, and the radar location was chosen in the Al-Haisha area in Ma'an governorate at an elevation of about 1720 meters above sea level, due to the technical advantages of the site that provide wide coverage of the southern regions of the kingdom, and enhance the efficiency of meteorological monitoring and tracking.

Al-Khattab explained that the new radar will contribute to improving the monitoring of clouds, thunderstorms, heavy rain, flash floods, and dust storms, as well as tracking severe weather phenomena which have become more frequent and impactful due to climate change. This enhances the ability of relevant authorities to take appropriate proactive measures to protect lives and property.

He pointed out that the project represents a qualitative addition to the national monitoring network and will support weather forecasting and early warning operations in various regions of the kingdom, especially in the southern governorates, reflecting positively on various vital sectors and enhancing the level of public safety. He noted that the project's timeline targets completion of the implementation and operation by 2027, making the radar an essential part of the national early warning system that the department is continuously developing and updating.

Al-Khattab indicated that this project aligns with the national directives aimed at enhancing readiness to handle natural hazards and climate changes and reaffirms the Meteorological Department's commitment to continue investing in modern technologies and developing its services to achieve the highest levels of accuracy and efficiency in serving the nation and citizens.

The Al-Haisha radar project is one of the important national projects that will enhance the kingdom's capabilities in meteorological monitoring and early warning, and support the risk and disaster management system, in line with the accelerating climate developments and enhancing Jordan's ability to deal with future weather challenges.
