Khaberni - An official statistic, released on Wednesday, revealed that 159 people were killed and 1087 others injured in traffic accidents in the liberated areas of Yemen during the first quarter of 2026.
The Director-General of Traffic Police in Yemen, Major General Omar Bamashmos, stated that the regions under the internationally recognized government witnessed 1017 traffic accidents, distributed as follows: 551 vehicle collisions, 282 pedestrian accidents, 114 vehicle rollovers, 33 crashes into fixed objects, 23 falls from a vehicle, 4 vehicle fire incidents, and 5 Rollover crashes and 5 other incidents.
The Yemeni official clarified that the direct human losses from these incidents amounted to 1246 individuals, among them 159 died, and 1087 were injured; 414 of those injuries were severe, resulting in disabilities, while the remaining 673 people suffered injuries ranging from minor to moderate.
The direct material losses amounted to 609 million and 115 thousand riyals, while subsequent financial losses (medical and therapeutic) as well as the costly economic, psychological, and social repercussions have not been counted.
The security official attributed the causes of traffic accidents to poor road conditions and technical unsuitability, as well as drivers exceeding the speed and load limits, dangerous overtaking, reversing traffic lanes, frequent stopping in the middle of the road, distractions due to communication and side conversations, neglect of regular and permanent vehicle maintenance, and ignoring mechanical faults and damages.
He also mentioned that motorcycles contributed significantly to traffic incidents by violating traffic rules and regulations, exceeding load capacity by carrying more than two people and sometimes an entire family, as well as by children and inexperienced individuals driving them, according to the Yemeni official.
