Are You a Prisoner to Your Phone 6 Signs That Reveal the Truth

Khaberni - When the blue light from your phone turns into a health alert indicator, it might be time to rethink your relationship with screens.

Excessive use of smartphones is no longer just a daily habit, but has been associated with clear physical symptoms such as headaches, eye strain, and hand or wrist pain due to prolonged use.

However, the greater concern lies in the psychological effects, as studies suggest that phone overuse can exacerbate issues like anxiety and mood decline.

Naomi Damerville, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, points out what is known as "passive browsing," which is the frequent indulgence in consuming negative news, whether related to global conflicts or unsettling political content.

She explains that this behavior creates a recurring cycle; the user starts browsing with the purpose of being informed, but ends up with negative feelings that lead to more browsing, resulting in deteriorated mood and increased stress and agitation, with a direct impact on focus and self-confidence.

In this context, Damerville identifies six signs that may indicate excessive reliance on the phone:

The phone becoming the center of all daily activities.
Immediate interaction with notifications and fear of missing out on content.
Weak ability to concentrate and multitask with the phone.
Inability to tolerate boredom.
Appearance of physical symptoms such as headaches, sleep disturbances, and eye strain.
Conflicts in relationships due to excessive phone use.
To deal with this condition, Damerville advocates for what is known as "digital detoxing", which aims to reset the relationship with screens and improve quality of life.

The practical steps for this approach include: tracking usage time, setting a clear plan to gradually reduce usage, and replacing digital habits with real-life activities such as reading or pursuing hobbies.

She also emphasizes the importance of persistence and commitment, even if it starts with simple changes, pointing out that reducing reliance on the phone helps improve attention, self-control, and enhance social skills.

Although sudden stopping might cause some symptoms like boredom or stress, this stage is considered normal and can be overcome through a well-thought-out plan that helps build healthy and sustainable habits away from screens.
