Jordan A National Committee for Protecting Children and Adolescents from the Risks of Social Media

 

Khaberni - The Cabinet decided during its session held today, Tuesday, in the Karak Governorate, to approve the formation of a national committee to protect children and adolescents from the risks associated with the use of social media and internet platforms.
The committee will recommend necessary measures, in coordination with relevant entities, and study regulatory and technical options available to restrict children's access to social media platforms and evaluate the most suitable model for implementation in the kingdom in terms of effectiveness, cost, technical feasibility, and alignment with the national legal framework, and it will develop execution mechanisms to be implemented by relevant parties, including internet service providers and related platforms within a specific timeframe.
The committee will also study and enhance the educational and awareness aspect for protecting children in the digital environment, through developing educational and awareness programs targeted at children, adolescents, and parents, reinforcing the culture of safe and responsible usage of social media platforms. This includes suggesting the integration of digital safety concepts and conscious use of social media systematically within the educational environment in coordination with the Ministry of Education.
The committee will also prepare and implement graded and ongoing national awareness campaigns in cooperation with the Ministry of Government Communication to raise societal awareness about the risks associated with the use of social media platforms and prevention methods, ensuring that awareness messages reach diverse segments of the society in a professional and balanced manner.
The committee, chaired by the President of the Board of Commissioners of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, includes members such as: the Director of the Commissioners' Affairs Unit / Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, and the CEOs of Jordanian Mobile Telephone Company (Zain), Orange Jordan, Umniah Telecommunications, and representatives from the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, the National Council for Family Affairs, the National Center for Cyber Security, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Government Communication, the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Interior / Public Security - Family and Juvenile Protection Department, with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission undertaking the General Secretariat of the Committee.
