Khaberni - France has granted citizenship to actor George Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney, "because they contribute through their outstanding work, to enhancing French international influence and cultural impact", according to what the French government said last Wednesday, in response to inquiries from a junior minister in the government.
The announcement of the naturalization of the star born in Kentucky, famous for the "Ocean's" heist movies, and his wife, the human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, along with their twins Ella and Alexander, was made last weekend in the Journal Officiel, which is the official bulletin in which government decrees are published.
Marie-Pierre Vedrine, a junior minister at the Ministry of the Interior, expressed her concerns last Wednesday that some of the new French citizens might believe that the famous couple received special treatment. It is known that the actor speaks only what he himself described as "terrible French."
Vedrine said in an interview with France Info: "The message sent is not good. There is a matter of justice, and in my opinion, this matter is very necessary."
The couple bought a property in France in 2021, and Clooney said it has become their primary residence. There are several ways for non-French residents in France to obtain citizenship. It is not clear whether the actor (64 years old) has retained his American citizenship.
And as for his wife (47 years old), born in Lebanon and raised in the UK, she was naturalized as a French citizen under her maiden name, Amal Alamuddin, before their marriage. The twins, now 8 years old, were born in London.
