Toukan to the US Ambassador: The Jordanian Nuclear Program is Comprehensive and Integrated
Khaberni - Dr. Khaled Toukan, head of the Jordanian Atomic Energy Commission, discussed with the US Ambassador in Amman, Jim Holtsnider, during their meeting today ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries, and mechanisms to support and enhance them in all areas, especially cooperation in the nuclear energy field.
According to a statement distributed by the commission, Toukan reviewed the ongoing work to implement the Jordanian nuclear program, emphasizing that it is a comprehensive and integrated program to enhance peaceful uses of nuclear energy in Jordan.
Toukan also gave a briefing about the research reactor on the campus of the University of Science and Technology, and the project for exploring and mining Jordanian uranium ores.
He pointed out that the Jordanian nuclear research and training reactor plays a fundamental role in building the capacities and competencies of Jordanians in nuclear science and technology through qualifying and training new generations of researchers, scientists, and nuclear engineers in Jordan, in addition to using this reactor in producing radioisotopes needed by various medical, industrial, and radiation sectors in Jordan.
He indicated that uranium stocks are considered strategic for Jordan, which enhances the security of nuclear fuel supply for nuclear energy generation and gives Jordan independence in the nuclear energy field in the future for generating electricity or desalinating seawater.
Toukan and Holtsnider discussed the Commission's efforts in exploring uranium in central Jordan, which has proven its reserves and extraction with high purity and efficiency.
