Opening of a New School in Mafraq with German Funding Covering 5170 m²

Khaberni - On Wednesday, the inauguration of the Zahour District Secondary School officially took place in Mafraq Governorate, a step that reflects partnership, resilience, and opportunity creation, in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, the Ministry of Education, the German Embassy in Amman, and the German Development Bank.

The school was funded by the German government through the German Development Bank, serving as a prominent model within Jordan's efforts to expand access to formal education for Jordanian and Syrian children affected by the Syrian refugee crisis.

This project directly supports the commitment of the Jordan Response Plan to the Syrian crisis by enhancing educational services in the host communities, through providing a modern and sustainable educational environment, an alternative to the rented and overcrowded schools. The opening of Zahour District School marks a major milestone within a broader program that includes the construction of 11 new schools in different regions of the kingdom.

The total construction area of the school is 5,170 square meters, where the building consists of three floors designed to accommodate up to 986 students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The school includes spacious classrooms, rooms designated for kindergarten, modern scientific laboratories, a computer lab, an art room, a workshop, a library, and a multipurpose hall, reflecting Jordan's vision of a high-quality, future-oriented public education system.

In his speech during the ceremony, the German ambassador to Jordan, Bertram von Moltke, affirmed his country's commitment to supporting Jordan and the host communities, stating: "Germany is proud to stand alongside Jordan to ensure that every child receives a safe, modern, and dignified education. This school is not just a building; it is an investment in opportunity, stability, and the future of this community."

The new school has had a direct impact on the educational reality in Mafraq Governorate; its opening led to the closure of a rented school and the complete abandonment of the double shift system, which relieved pressure on the educational system and improved the quality of education and learning for students in the region.

Zahour District Secondary Mixed School began its operation on August 24, 2025, and currently serves 700 students, including 264 Syrians making up 37.71% of the total student body. With ongoing population growth in Mafraq, the school is ready to welcome more students in the coming years, playing a pivotal role in supporting community development.
