Khaberni - MP Dr. Lobna Mohammed Al-Namur directed a set of parliamentary questions to the Prime Minister regarding the privatization of the Aqaba Port, the text of which follows:

Pursuant to the provisions of Article (96) of the Constitution and in accordance with the provisions of Article (123) of the Internal Rules of the House of Representatives, I request the following question to be directed to His Excellency the Prime Minister.

The question text:
1. Does the government or any of its bodies (including the Ports Authority or the Aqaba Development Corporation) intend to privatize the main Aqaba Port or hand it over for operation and management by any foreign or local company?

2. Have any agreements, memoranda of understanding, or operational or management contracts concerning the Aqaba Port or its facilities been signed with any company? If so, please provide me with a copy of them and all annexes and conditions.

3. At a time when the government announces positive results and developments in the ports’ performances, what are the economic, administrative, or operational reasons and justifications that drive towards privatization or handing over operations to a foreign company?

4. What is the fate of the Jordanian workers and employees at the Aqaba Port if any operating or privatization agreement is signed? And does the government commit to guaranteeing their employment, financial, and social rights?

5. What is the percentage of the foreign partner or investor (if any) in any agreement made or being negotiated? What are the duration of the contract and the terms for its termination or oversight?

 6. Has an economic, strategic, and security impact assessment study been prepared before proceeding with any agreement concerning the port? If such a study exists, please provide me with an official copy of it.

With utmost respect

                                                                                 MP
