Jordanian security denies harming a detainee and clarifies the details
الأمن الأردني ينفي إيذاء نزيل ويوضح التفاصيل

Khaberni - The spokesperson for the Public Security Directorate stated that a detainee in the Zarqa Reform and Rehabilitation Center was arrested based on a judicial order on a criminal charge, with his relatives spreading information that lacks accuracy and contradicts truth and reality.

The spokesperson for the Public Security Directorate announced today that the concerned individual was detained by the public prosecutor of the Grand Criminal Court on a charge of attempted murder.

In detail, the spokesperson indicated that the mentioned individual faces two cases; the first for attempted murder due to stabbing a person during a brawl that occurred in Zarqa Governorate in 2020, and the second for causing death resulting from a traffic accident that occurred in Zarqa Governorate in 2021 involving his vehicle (whose vehicle license, driving license, and insurance had expired) and another vehicle.

The spokesperson reported that after being bailed out regarding the two cases, the individual fled the country leaving the cases behind before they could be resolved, prompting communications with Interpol and issuing an international alert for him.

The spokesperson explained that Interpol took the necessary actions and one of the countries he escaped to extradited him back to Jordan in 2024, and on August 1, 2024, the public prosecutor of the Grand Criminal Court decided to detain him in connection with the attempted murder case, while no action was taken regarding the second case (causing death) because it was covered by a general amnesty.

He further stated that the mentioned individual went on a hunger strike within the Zarqa Reform and Rehabilitation Center demanding his release, a matter that depends on the judicial authority, and the Public Security Directorate has taken all medical protocol measures with him according to the law, and there have been several attempts to dissuade him from the strike, but he insisted on continuing it.

The spokesperson mentioned that the individual refused treatment more than once within the center and the hospitals he was transferred to for check-ups and health assessments, following legal requirements for such cases, and all of those events were legally documented.

He noted that weeks ago, the individual was transported to Zarqa Government Hospital following the recommendation of doctors due to complications from the hunger strike, and thereafter he was transferred to Al-Bashir Hospital where he is still under treatment, with all procedures documented legally.

The spokesperson emphasized that all claims about his detention for non-criminal purposes or that he was subjected to harm within the rehabilitation center are utterly false, with undeniable evidence and proof that cannot be refuted.

And the spokesperson warned against spreading or transmitting false and misleading news related to this case, under the penalty of legal accountability.
