Samsungs chip production declines as workers protest wages

Khaberni - Samsung Electronics' production of processor and memory chips in its factories in South Korea decreased by 58% and 18% respectively during the night shift on Thursday, as a result of unionized workers participating in a wage protest, according to the company’s union.

The union stated that many workers who participated in the protest on Thursday at the Pyeongtaek factory complex south of Seoul, were absent from the night shift that runs from 10 PM Thursday to 6 AM Friday at the company's production facilities in South Korea, following the end of the protest, according to "Reuters".

The union added that "Samsung Electronics" factories operate 24 hours a day through three shifts.

Thousands of Samsung Electronics workers organized a march on Thursday at the computer chip complex in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, demanding higher bonuses, and they threatened to strike amidst rising demand for artificial intelligence which is boosting memory chip profits.

The workers gathered at a factory complex holding banners, amid heavy police presence "and they chanted for compensation transparency and the elimination of bonus caps".

Samsung had earlier this month anticipated recording record operating profits during the first quarter estimated at about 57.2 trillion won ($38.6 billion).
