Washington Welcomes the Arrest of the Butcher of Tadamon in Syria

Khaberni - The American envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, welcomed the Syrian Ministry of Interior's announcement of arresting Amjad Youssef, nicknamed the "Butcher of Tadamon", accused of committing atrocities against Syrian civilians.
Barrack described this step as a "new model of justice" in post-Assad Syria, based on the rule of law and national reconciliation, affirming the United States' support for the Syrian people in their pursuit of justice.

The American envoy said in a post on his "X" platform account: "Today we welcome the announcement by the Syrian Ministry of Interior of the arrest of Amjad Youssef – infamously known as the 'Butcher of Tadamon', responsible for horrific atrocities against Syrian civilians. This represents a strong step away from impunity towards accountability, and embodies the new model of justice forming in post-Assad Syria: a model based on the rule of law, national reconciliation, and equitable justice irrespective of one's past affiliations".

Barrack added: "President Donald Trump and the United States stand with the Syrian people in supporting true justice and the new rule of law, to aid this wounded nation in healing".

Amjad Youssef is believed to be a former official in the Syrian security services during Bashar al-Assad's regime, linked to severe violations in the Tadamon area of Damascus, including acts of torture, murder, and arbitrary detention. His nickname "Butcher of Tadamon" comes from the testimonies of survivors who documented his atrocities against civilians in that Damascus neighborhood.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced Youssef's arrest, without providing additional details about the charges against him or his detention location. This arrest comes as part of the new Syrian authorities' efforts to hold former regime elements accountable and implement the "transitional justice" policy long advocated by the Syrian opposition and the international community.
