Khaberni - The US Department of Justice called on the government on Friday to adopt execution methods including firing squad, electric shock, and gas inhalation for those convicted of the most severe federal crimes.
The department reported difficulties in obtaining the drugs needed for lethal injection, stating that the acting US Attorney General Todd Blanch, who issued the report, authorized seeking death sentences for 9 individuals after US President Donald Trump reversed a federal execution moratorium issued by former President Joe Biden.
The department added that among the measures adopted was the reauthorization of the lethal injection protocol used during Trump's first administration, and expanding the protocol to include additional methods such as firing squad and streamlining internal procedures to expedite executions.
Blanch stated that "under Trump's leadership, the Department of Justice is once again enforcing the law and standing with the victims."
The report came as part of Trump's campaign promise during his last election campaign to resume the application of the death penalty in his second presidential term. In his first term, which ended in early 2021, Trump resumed federal executions after a 20-year hiatus, executing 13 federal prisoners by lethal injection within a few months at the end of his term.
Blanch, in the report, instructed the Bureau of Prisons, part of the Department of Justice, to amend the execution protocol to "include additional and constitutional methods currently sanctioned by the laws of some states".
Blanch in his instructions referred to traditional methods such as firing squad and electric shock, and the new method of execution by gas asphyxiation, which was initiated by the state of Alabama in 2024.

The report mentioned that this amendment would help ensure the department is prepared to carry out legal executions, even if a specific drug is not available.
Former President Joe Biden -who is a Democrat- commuted the sentences of 37 individuals on death row in federal prisons, leaving only three men remaining.
