Lebanon 50000 housing units damaged and destroyed due to Israeli attacks

Khaberni - The National Center for Scientific Research in Lebanon has counted damage and destruction to more than 50,000 housing units due to Israeli operations over six weeks of war with Hezbollah, according to an official on Wednesday.

The Secretary General of the National Council for Scientific Research, Dr. Shadi Abdullah, told the French News Agency that "in about 46 days (of war), there are 17,756 destroyed housing units and 32,668 damaged housing units."

Abdullah reported in a press conference totals of 62,000, before he clarified that a mistake occurred in the count.

Despite a truce between Hezbollah and Israel running from midnight Thursday to Friday for ten days, the Israeli forces stationed in South Lebanon continue to carry out demolitions and explosions, according to the Lebanese authorities and eyewitnesses, while preventing residents of dozens of border villages from returning to them.

The war, which started on the second of March, resulted in the death of more than 2,400 people and the displacement of more than a million people from their homes.

According to Abdullah, the National Council for Scientific Research estimates that "428 housing units were destroyed and 50 housing units were damaged during the three days of the ceasefire," which Lebanon will request to extend for a month.

Washington will host a meeting between the ambassadors of Lebanon and Israel on Thursday, following a meeting last week that was the first between the two countries in decades, which was followed by an announcement by US President Donald Trump about the ceasefire.

A Lebanese official source told the French News Agency on Wednesday, asking not to be named, that "Lebanon will request the extension of the truce for a month, and for Israel to stop the bombing and destruction in the areas where it is present."
