Ronaldinho talks about the worst moments of his life behind bars

Khaberni -  Brazilian star Ronaldinho has come back into the spotlight again, but this time through the gateway of human confessions, after revealing in a new documentary on Netflix about one of the toughest periods of his life when he found himself behind bars in Paraguay in 2020, in an incident he described as "the worst ever," despite an exceptional football career that placed him among the greatest players of the game.

The former Ballon d'Or winner and one of Barcelona's brightest stars was arrested along with his brother and agent Roberto de Assis Moreira, after they were accused of using forged travel documents, before spending a month in prison and another four months under house arrest in a hotel in the capital, Asunción. Despite denying the charges, the case ended with their release without any formal charges, in exchange for a large fine.

The British newspaper The Sun reported that during his detention, Ronaldinho found himself in an environment completely away from the limelight he was accustomed to, yet he quickly adapted to the new reality, where he participated in football matches in prison, blending in with both inmates and guards alike.

The Brazilian star didn't lose his unique touch, as he led his team to victory in a major mini-tournament, in a notable scene that reflected his ability to turn even the toughest moments into a space for human interaction.

This period also constituted a severe psychological test, as he spoke about feelings of helplessness and amazement at the situation he found himself in, affirming that he had never imagined going through such an experience. Despite the pressures, he mentioned that he tried to maintain his balance by building relationships inside the prison, considering communication with others as his way to overcome that phase and mitigate the impacts of isolation and restrictions imposed on him.

The player, who enchanted the world with his skills and was crowned with the Brazilian team as the 2002 World Cup champion, did not hide the bitterness of the experience, affirming that he found himself stuck in a situation he had no hand in creating. Nevertheless, he attempted to adapt inside the prison, where he participated in mini football matches with inmates and guards, leading his team to a significant victory in a scene that reflected his cheerful personality even in the toughest conditions.

Ronaldinho’s journey began in the impoverished neighborhoods of Porto Alegre, where he grew up in a cohesive family before losing his father at an early age, turning his brother into his greatest supporter. His exceptional talent emerged early, leading his national team to victory in the World Youth Championship, before paving his way to European professional football through Paris Saint-Germain, and from there to true glory with Barcelona, where he returned the team to local and continental podiums.

Despite his achievements, which included winning the Champions League and the FIFA World Player of the Year award, his career was not without controversy, be it due to his flamboyant lifestyle or the decline in his performance in later stages, which led to his departure to Milan and then his return to Brazil, where he achieved his last major titles with Atlético Mineiro.

Off the field, crises also pursued him, from legal cases and financial penalties, to criticism due to his personal life, and up to the loss of his mother in 2021, which was a harsh human blow. Nonetheless, Ronaldinho confirms in his latest appearance that he still retains his usual smile, considering his life “full of surprises,” and that he deals with everything he has gone through as part of an extraordinary journey of a star that will never be repeated.
