Khaberni - The Ministry of Public Works and Housing has announced the start of the implementation of a project for the maintenance and improvement of the desert highway in various regions stretching from the Al Quweira area to the Wadi Yutm customs, covering a total length of about 20 kilometers, in addition to maintenance works in various locations of the back Aqaba road, within the framework of the ministry's ongoing plans to rehabilitate and develop the vital road network in the kingdom.
The Minister of Public Works and Housing, Maher Abu Al-Samn, stated that the project is a continuation of a series of maintenance and modernization projects carried out by the ministry on the desert highway and the back Aqaba road, due to their strategic importance as two main arteries connecting the capital Amman to the port of Aqaba, servicing the movement of goods and passengers, in addition to supporting the economic sectors, especially trade and tourism.
He added that the ministry prioritizes the maintenance of the desert highway due to the high traffic density it experiences, emphasizing that the works aim to enhance the infrastructure's efficiency and bolster traffic safety standards, positively impacting the reduction of accidents and improving the road users’ experience.
The project includes scraping and removing the damaged asphalt layers, repaving the road with modern asphalt mixtures according to the highest technical specifications, alongside the implementation of furnishing and traffic safety works, which include painting the road with white and yellow regulatory lines, installing ground reflectors, and metal and concrete barriers in required locations.
The ministry's staff supervise the project's execution directly, coordinating with relevant entities to ensure adherence to the timelines and approved specifications, noting that temporary traffic measures will be taken during the implementation period to ensure the flow of traffic and protect road users and workers involved in the project.
The cost of the project is about 3.25 million Jordanian Dinars, with the completion of the works expected within a period of 180 days from the start date.
This project is part of the ministry's vision aimed at maintaining the road network and enhancing its readiness, and boosting the efficiency of land transportation, contributing to supporting economic development and improving the level of services provided to citizens and road users across different regions of the kingdom.
