Why does Iran threaten Jordan
Author: الدكتور يوسف عبيدالله خريسات

Jordan appears in every regional historical stage as a country displaying full Arab presence. It serves as the quiver, bow, arrows, and spear of Arabism that stands at the flank of challenges and as the Arab house where the paths of the East and West intersect. This is why the sensitivity of the Iranian stance towards Jordan is understandable. Iran recognizes that threatening Jordan is tantamount to compromising a symbol of Arab stability and a pillar of balance in the region.
Over decades, Iranian political awareness has formed on the basis of influence, expansion, and building zones of influence. Hence, it sees Jordan, which maintains its balance and independence of decision, as an obstacle against Persian dominance. Jordan is a state with a clear political doctrine based on protecting Arab identity and regional security, and preventing the gates of chaos from opening at its borders or within its Arab surroundings.
History clearly narrates that Jordan has never been far from the battles of the nation. It stood by Iraq in its long war against Iran to protect Arab balance and prevent the Arab region from being drawn into the Persian dominance project. At that time, the Jordanian leadership was present in the political, humanitarian, and logistical field, confirming Jordan's stance alongside its nation when it comes to Arab security and stability. This political memory still remains in the Iranian mind and forms part of the explanation for the sensitivity towards the Jordanian role.
Jordan’s strategic weight increases because it acts as both the eastern and western gateways of the Arab homeland. It is the bridge that connects the Gulf to the Levant and the window overlooking Palestine. Thus, any threat to Jordan is in fact a threat to Arab stability and an attempt to destabilize a key fulcrum in the regional system.
Jordan is a state that does not seek conflict, but at the same time, it does not accept a reality imposed upon it that affects its security or sovereignty. It has proven throughout its modern history that it possesses a great capacity to withstand challenges, whether they are political, security, or economic, and it relies on the consciousness of its leadership, the cohesion of its people, and its strategic position in facing pressures.
Jordan's strength lies in its Arab symbolism, being a meeting point of Arab and international interests, and in its ability to maintain a delicate balance between national constants and the demands of the political reality. Therefore, the resilience of Jordan represents the resilience of the nation, and its stability is a stability for the entire Arab East.
Iran recognizes that Jordan is not an easy arena and that threatening it does not mean pressuring just one country but rather approaching the heart of the Arab equation. Throughout its history, Jordan has been a fortress for the nation, its resilience has always been the resilience of the Arabs, and its stability has been a symbol of regional balance. Therefore, protecting Jordan is an Arab responsibility and a strategic priority to ensure the security and stability of the Levant.
