iPhone Fold Leaks A New Glass Sandwich Innovation for Screen Protection

Khaberni - Apple has innovated a new design seeking to protect the screen of the first foldable iPhone from damage, shielding it from the hinge mechanism itself.

The development of the foldable iPhone - said to be named iPhone Fold - was dominated by Apple's emphasis on avoiding the screen wrinkling issue that other foldable phones suffer from.

In a post on Monday on the Chinese platform Weibo, the well-known leaker "Digital Chat Station" claimed that the screen used in the foldable iPhone will surpass the use of "self-healing glass" and the smooth hinge design, as the structure of the screen panel itself will play a significant role, according to a report by "AppleInsider," a site specialized in technology news.

It is said that Apple uses a dual-layer structure of UTG/UFG - ultra-thin glass and ultra-flexible glass - where the actual screen layer will be placed between two thin layers of glass, one on top and the other on the bottom.

It might seem odd to add a glass layer beneath the screen element itself, but there are several reasons for this.

The first reason, according to the leaker "Digital Chat Station," is to prevent the screen from directly contacting the hinge mechanism. As the iPhone Fold folds, the screen and the hinge move, which could lead to them touching each other.

Another reason is to reduce the mechanical stress caused by the folding process. By adding glass layers on both sides, these layers bear the majority of the pressure during folding, reducing the stress on the screen panel itself.

Although "Digital Chat Station" is among the active leakers, the accuracy of his information does not always match the volume of his leaks. Also, this is not his only post about this much-rumored device.

When Apple launches the iPhone Fold, likely later in 2026, the company will have made significant efforts and thoughtfully considered how to keep the screen in its best condition. This includes claims of having a fold, but it will be barely noticeable to users.

The screen will also receive advanced protection against scratches. In February, Apple was evaluating which of two film materials it would place over the folding glass to protect the screen from damage.
