Turkey A students suicide attempt turns into a tragic murder at school

Khaberni - A preliminary investigation into a horrific murder incident inside a high school in Turkey reveals shocking details, after the student’s intention to commit suicide transitioned into a bloody attack.

The preliminary investigations into the murder of a high school student by a teacher inside the school showed that the attacking student intended to commit suicide that day, and that preventing the incident was entirely possible.

On Monday, the 17-year-old student Furqan attacked the biology teacher with a knife inside the classroom, resulting in her death, and he also stabbed the chemistry teacher and a number of other students before he was subdued.

Furqan explained during the initial investigations that he had come to the school on the day of the incident to meet the student counselor for help after breaking up with his girlfriend two days earlier, and that his intention was to commit suicide after that meeting.

He added that the attempt to contact the counselor was unsuccessful, leading to an acute stress episode; he began hearing voices inside his head, he claimed. He confirmed that he always carried a knife, and that he entered a random classroom and attacked the first person he saw, noting that he was not in his senses at that moment, and all he remembers is running through the corridor.

The student revealed that the victim, Fatma Nur Çelik (44 years old), had been his biology teacher in a previous class, and there had been no conflict between them or with the chemistry teacher Zeynep (52 years old) who was injured, nor with the student he also stabbed.

The whereabouts of the student counselor "Shida" at the time of trying to contact her remained unclear, which Furqan pointed out in his statement, affirming that preventing the incident was possible had the meeting actually occurred.

The incident occurred just two days after Furqan left the hospital where he had been receiving treatment for schizophrenia for about 20 months, following his family’s consent for his discharge.

The following day, Istanbul witnessed a general strike by teachers, during which schools were disrupted in protest of the crime, while teachers in other Turkish cities held protest stand-ins demanding greater protection and surveillance within schools.

A solemn funeral was held for the deceased teacher inside her school, attended by a large number of government officials, teachers, and parents, and it was announced that the school would be named after her.

The public prosecutor's office opened an investigation to find out how the killer brought a knife into the school, and whether anyone had helped him plan the crime.

The opposition parties called on the Ministry of Education to increase the number of educational counselors and security guards in schools, while the teachers' unions demanded stricter penalties for those involved in violent activities within educational institutions.
