Shocking Statistics About One Million People Die Annually Due to Work Stress

Khaberni - Recent international reports have revealed shocking numbers about deaths resulting from work stress. More than 840,000 people lose their lives annually due to direct health complications related to the work environment. The data showed that these deaths are not just random accidents, but are the cumulative result of psychological and social risks that employees face daily.

Researchers have confirmed that this hidden cost is not limited to the economic aspect alone. It also extends to include the deterioration of the physical and mental health of workers. Studies have shown that long working hours, job insecurity, and increasing professional expectations now pose a real risk to human life.

The findings clarified that cardiovascular diseases and severe mental disorders, which could lead to suicide, are among the most significant causes stemming from unhealthy work environments. The report added that this phenomenon requires urgent intervention from institutions to ensure a safe working environment.

Hidden Dangers Behind Office Doors

Experts noted that the risk is no longer confined to direct physical injuries. It has become associated with the way work is designed and managed. Analyses revealed that psychological and social elements, including relationships within the institution and administrative policies, play a pivotal role in employee health.

The report explained that risks are distributed across three main levels starting from the job nature itself. Studies have confirmed that the mismatch of tasks with skills and the design of tasks lacking diversity contribute to increasing stress. It added that the way work is organized and institutional policies are other components that determine the safety of workers.

The organization explained that institutional policies lacking mechanisms for consultation with workers increase the severity of crises. It emphasized that excessive digital monitoring and harsh evaluation systems are among the most important factors that raise anxiety and stress levels among employees in the modern age.

Severe Economic and Human Losses

Estimations revealed that professional stress leads to the loss of about 45 million healthy life years annually. It added that this loss reflects the years of life wasted due to illness, disability, or premature death due to working conditions.

Numbers indicated that the economic impact of this phenomenon exceeds 1% of the global gross domestic product. It confirmed that this financial burden results from decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and higher healthcare costs associated with occupational diseases.

The data explained that the organization based its estimations on five major risks prevalent globally. It stressed that linking these factors to chronic diseases and depression is what led to this alarming number of annual deaths.

Labor Market Transformations and the Future

Recent changes such as digitalization and remote work have introduced new forms of challenges. It added that these transformations, despite their flexibility, have created blurry boundaries between personal life and work.

The analyses showed that continuous monitoring via technological means increases the employee's sense of instability. It confirmed that improving the psychological work environment is a necessary investment and not just a job perk.

Expert Manal Aziz clarified that protecting the health of workers is the basis for achieving sustainable economic development. She added that institutions that do not reconsider their current policies will face greater losses in talent and productivity in the long run.
