Heart tests for the youth could save hundreds of lives annually

Khaberni - Experts and doctors confirm that conducting routine heart tests on youth can prevent hundreds of sudden deaths each year, especially those resulting from hidden heart conditions whose symptoms do not appear in advance.

Studies, according to "Daily Mail", indicate that sudden cardiac death accounts for about 12 young lives weekly in the United Kingdom under the age of 35, often occurring during sleep or daily activity without warning.

A comprehensive study led by City, University of London’s St George's campus, involving more than 104,000 people aged 14 to 35, found that one in every 300 youths has a severe heart condition detectable through an Electrocardiogram (ECG), enabling early medical intervention such as pacemakers or surgeries to save their lives.

The results also showed that sudden cardiac risk does not differ between athletes and non-athletes, debunking the common belief that physical activity increases the risk of occurrence.

Dr. Steven Cox, CEO of the CRY foundation, says: "The question is no longer whether heart screening saves lives, but how many lives can be saved and how more tragedies can be prevented."

Studies estimate that one in every 250 people suffers from a hereditary heart condition, affecting around 260,000 people in the United Kingdom.

Health and charitable organizations are working to expand annual screening programs for the youth to identify severe cases and provide timely appropriate treatment.
