Polluted Air Threatens Your Sleep Study Reveals a Worrisome Relationship

Khaberni - A scientific study revealed that exposure to polluted air may increase the risk of obstructive sleep apnea during sleep, a condition in which breathing stops periodically throughout the night.

Researchers reached this conclusion after analyzing health data and sleep data for more than 4,000 adults, comparing it with data related to pollution in their places of residence. The analysis showed that an increase in the concentration of fine particles in the air is associated with an increased likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea incidents. Specifically, a higher level of particles (PM2.5) over a month was linked to approximately a 14% increase in risk. Larger particles (PM10) also showed a consistent association with sleep disturbances, especially when exposed to them over long periods.

Furthermore, higher levels of carbon monoxide were linked to an increased risk of sleep apnea during several months of exposure. In contrast, other pollutants, such as nitrogen dioxide and ozone, showed no statistically significant association after considering other factors.
Researchers indicate that even pollution at moderate air levels can affect sleep quality and health. The findings highlight the importance of controlling pollution levels, especially given that sleep apnea is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment.
