Stomach Gurgling A Natural Sign or a Digestive Issue Alert

Khaberni - Dr. Ivan Dvorakin, a gastroenterologist, indicates that stomach gurgling is a natural process associated with the movement of gases and fluids through the intestines. However, sometimes it may point to a digestive system issue.

He says: "Stomach gurgling occurs due to contractions of the intestinal muscles (peristalsis), and may be a normal physiological phenomenon that does not require treatment, or in some cases, it may indicate a health problem."

According to him, if the gurgling is not accompanied by other symptoms, then it is usually linked to the diet and eating habits, as it may result from consuming foods rich in gas-producing substances, or eating quickly, or talking while eating, which leads to swallowing air.

However, if additional symptoms such as pain, diarrhea, or constipation appear, it is crucial to consult a doctor. Among the conditions that may accompany intestinal gurgling include:

Food intolerance, such as lactose intolerance, where bloating and diarrhea occur after consuming dairy products.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, where bacteria move from the large to the small intestine, hindering the digestion process and increasing gas production.
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, where a lack of enzymes leads to incomplete digestion of the food and its fermentation inside the intestines.
Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, which affect absorption and peristaltic movement of the intestines.
Constipation, where stool stagnation leads to increased fermentation and gas formation.
Irritable bowel syndrome, where there is a coordination disorder in the intestinal contractions.
And he adds: "If stomach gurgling occurs without other symptoms, it is important to pay attention to the diet and eating habits, as this is often the cause."

If the gurgling is accompanied by pain, intestinal disorders, or other symptoms, it is essential to consult a specialist before taking any medications.
