Petra University wins international funding to transform a Jordanian patent into commercial products

Khaberni - Petra University has won international funding to transform one of its patents into commercial products, as part of a project supported by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in collaboration with Luvent Consulting GmbH, and implemented by the Academic-Industrial Integration Platform (JAIP).
The win is for the patent submitted by Professor Dr. Maiyas Al-Reemawi from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, titled: "A safe foam-forming liquid composition for personal care products," which bears the international number (WO2022018779), and was published on May 27, 2022.
This patent can be used to develop multiple commercial products, and the first product registered with the Jordanian Food and Drug Administration as a medical supply has already been developed, after scientific studies that proved its effectiveness, safety, and superiority over competing products, through experiments conducted on volunteers with the necessary official approvals.
Professor Dr. Rami Abdel Rahim, the university president, said that this achievement comes as part of efforts to enhance the university's role in supporting innovation-based economy, and linking scientific research with market needs, which contributes to creating quality job opportunities and supporting sustainable economic development in Jordan.
The product is distinguished by its ability to sterilize the mouth from harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses efficiently and naturally, while maintaining the health of the gums and teeth.
This innovation was chosen among the outputs of the first national conference titled: "Innovation as a driver for industry, investment, and economic growth," which saw the participation of (62) patents from Jordanian public and private universities and institutions, where (19) best inventions were selected to compete, and only (3) patents won the funding, with Petra University being the only private university to win alongside two public universities.
The innovation aims to develop safer and more effective formulations for personal care products, in line with modern health and regulatory requirements, and opens new prospects for the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries with added value.
The project will involve providing a package of commercial transformation services including: technology readiness assessment for industrial application, intellectual property and regulatory pathway analysis, market and commercial studies, in addition to building partnerships with the industrial sector and organizing business alignment meetings (B2B).
This support is provided without any financial burden on the university or the inventors, with full preservation of intellectual property rights.
