Foods that cause migraines and mental health issues

Khaberni  - Researchers from Sechenov University warn that excessive consumption of ready-made and ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of depression, migraines, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers identified fast food, sweetened soft drinks, processed meats, and foods containing trans fats and added sugars as potentially harmful. According to studies involving tens of thousands of people, regular consumption of these foods is associated with an increased risk of dementia and depressive disorders, and unhealthy dietary habits among young people are linked to a higher rate of depression.

The scientists pointed out that one of the main underlying mechanisms is the disruption of mitochondrial function, the cell structures responsible for energy production in cells. Excessive consumption of sugars and trans fats exacerbates oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, which may contribute to the development of brain insulin resistance and increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, excessive intake of ready-made foods or those containing hazardous chemicals leads to a disruption in the composition of gut bacteria, which in turn affects hormones in the body and brain function.

The researchers emphasize that modifying the diet and supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, and other nutrients can be part of the prevention of neurological diseases. However, dietary methods are seen as complementary to primary treatment and require individual selection under medical supervision.
