Iran and Russia conduct naval maneuvers on Thursday

Khaberni - The semi-official Fars News Agency reported that Iran and Russia will conduct naval maneuvers in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean on Thursday, just days after the Revolutionary Guards held military exercises in the Strait of Hormuz.

The agency quoted Iranian navy commander Hassan Maqsoudlou saying, "Achieving harmony and coordination in joint efforts to confront activities threatening maritime security and safety... as well as combating maritime terrorism, are among the main objectives of these joint maneuvers."

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards began military exercises in the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Monday.

The maneuvers aim to prepare the Guard "for potential security and military threats" in the Strait of Hormuz, after Washington deployed a large naval force in the Gulf.

Some Iranian officials have previously threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil production passes.

The maneuvers are being conducted under the supervision of the commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Major General Mohammad Pakpour.

Iranian media reported that the goal of the maneuvers is to enhance the Revolutionary Guards' ability for rapid response.
