Denmark Constructive Talks with Americans Regarding Greenland

Khaberni  - Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Friday that she and her counterpart in Greenland held a constructive meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Munich Security Conference concerning the semi-autonomous island situated in the Polar region.

Frederiksen explained - in a post on the X platform - that Rubio agreed to proceed with talks with Copenhagen regarding Greenland, while Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen indicated that the group would soon hold a second meeting.

For his part, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen mentioned on Instagram that the island's interests were "clearly highlighted" at the meeting, adding that the meeting confirmed that the ongoing talks are the right way forward.

Earlier, Nielsen pointed out that if Greenland's residents had to choose between the United States and Denmark, they would choose the latter.

U.S. President Donald Trump's attempt to assert control over Greenland has led to significant tension in recent months within the NATO alliance, which includes both Denmark and the United States.

Trump highlighted national security concerns regarding Russia and China, and this week NATO announced a mission to enhance its presence in the Arctic as part of efforts to defuse tensions.

The U.S. President has irritated European countries by insisting on placing Greenland under his country’s control, but he announced last month reaching an understanding with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte that grants the United States greater influence in this mineral-rich region with a strategic location.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday that he believes Greenland would want to join the United States, adding that "our relationship is very good with Europe. We’ll see how things go. We are currently negotiating regarding Greenland."

Washington, Copenhagen, and Nuuk (the capital of Greenland) began talks on January 28th in an attempt to resolve the diplomatic crisis.
