Khaberni - The Egyptian Army announced on Friday that the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Ahmed Khalifa, met retired General Khalifa Haftar during his visit to Libya, where he participated in the closing session of the first conference of chiefs of staff from Mediterranean Basin and Sub-Saharan countries.
The conference, held from February 10 to 12 in the city of Benghazi, Eastern Libya, was under the theme "Joint Cooperation to Combat Transnational Crimes" and saw the participation of several chiefs of staff, military and security leaders, academics, and international experts, according to prior information reported by the Libyan news agency.
The Egyptian Army stated in a release that Khalifa returned to his country after visiting Libya, having met Haftar and his deputy Saddam Haftar and Chief of Staff Khaled Haftar.
Khalifa affirmed, according to the statement, the "alignment in military relations and visions that meet the mutual interests of both sides."
The first conference discussed ways to establish military and security cooperation relations among the participating countries, to enhance regional security and stability, protect mutual interests, combat irregular migration, and fight terrorism, according to the Egyptian military statement.
It should be noted that Libya is suffering from a crisis of conflict between two governments, one internationally recognized as the Government of National Unity headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, based in the capital Tripoli in the west of the country, and the other appointed by the House of Representatives at the beginning of 2022, currently headed by Osama Hamad, based in Benghazi in the east.
For years, the United Nations has been making efforts to address conflicts between Libyan institutions that prevent the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections, which Libyans hope will lead to the reunification of the country's institutions.
