Khaberni - The Jordanian Meteorological Department participated in the scientific seminar organized by the Royal Jordanian Geographical Center titled “The Crescent of the Holy Month of Ramadan between Sharia and Science”, in cooperation with the General Iftaa Department, the Jordanian Astronomical Society, and the Institute of Space and Astronomical Science, attended by an elite of scholars and specialists.
His Eminence the Mufti of the Kingdom, Dr. Ahmad Hassnat, conveyed during his sponsorship of the seminar that «the decision to confirm the Crescent in Jordan is a purely Sharia decision, based on a clear methodology that combines Sharia texts and astronomical scientific facts, subject to no other considerations», emphasizing the importance of unifying scientific and legal efforts to enhance Muslim unity and reduce disagreement.
During his participation, the Director of the Meteorological Department, Mr. Raed Rafed Al Khattab, gave a speech explaining that the Meteorological Department is an active member of the Moon Sighting Committee, and plays a fundamental role in supporting the sighting process by providing accurate meteorological information that shows the suitability of the conditions for astronomical observation.
Al Khattab confirmed that sighting the Crescent of Ramadan is a legitimate worship with a scientific aspect, pointing out that Sharia represents the framework and reference, astronomy provides the scientific calculations related to birth, duration, and visibility prospects, while meteorology represents the actual atmospheric and field reality upon which the success of the observation is based.
He noted that the weather conditions at sunset — whether concerning clouds, dust, high humidity, or other meteorological conditions — can directly affect the visibility of the Crescent, making the role of meteorological affairs decisive in determining areas of clear skies and optimal observation opportunities, in addition to supporting field sighting teams with up-to-the-minute information.
He explained that meteorology and astronomy are tools to serve the Sharia purpose, affirming that the final decision in confirming the Crescent is a Sharia decision supported by science and accurate data, enhancing trust and reassurance among the citizens.
Al Khattab concluded his speech by saying: «When Sharia integrates with science, we achieve a more precise, clearer decision closer to the truth», affirming the continued role of the Meteorological Department in performing its national duty within the Kingdom's institutional integration system.
