Typhoon Basyang Claims 8 Lives and Causes Extensive Damage in the Philippines

Khaberni - Tropical Cyclone Basyang resulted in deaths and destruction in several areas of the Philippines, with ongoing loss assessment and warnings of new implications.

The Philippine authorities announced today, Sunday, that at least eight people were killed due to the severe impacts of Tropical Cyclone Basyang, which hit several areas, causing widespread human and material damage.

Diego Agustin Mariano, deputy spokesman for the Philippine Civil Defense Office, stated that four people died in Cagayan de Oro due to a sudden landslide affecting a residential area, while floods caused the death of three people in Iligan City, in addition to a drowning case reported in Agusan del Norte province.

Mariano explained in press statements that the announced toll is still preliminary, indicating the continuation of the damage and loss assessment operations.

Similarly, local authorities mentioned that about 3,800 families were affected by the rising floodwaters in several cyclone-hit areas, which necessitated evacuating more than two thousand people from their homes in Cagayan de Oro as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety.

The harsh weather conditions accompanying the cyclone led to paralysis in maritime transport, with several trips being suspended, which resulted in thousands of passengers being stranded in various parts of the country.

The official bodies warned of the continuing impact of the cyclone in the coming hours, urging citizens to adhere to safety instructions and follow alerts issued by the competent authorities.
