Statistics Population Census in its Third Phase Likely to Finish in June

Khaberni - General Director of the Department of Statistics Haider Freihat stated that the population census has reached the third of four phases, anticipating that this phase will end in the month of June next year.

Freihat explained, via "Al-Mamlaka" that Jordan's population is approximately 12 million, with Jordanians comprising about 70% of that number.

He noted that the last census was conducted in 2015, and since then the department has been making annual population estimates at the level of residential communities, indicating that upon reaching the actual count this year, and 11 years having passed since the previous census, the new number resulting from the actual count will be adopted, and the estimated numbers started after 2015 will be discarded.

Regarding the measurement of new job opportunities created, Freihat explained that this is done through two separate surveys, each including a sample comprised of 50,000 households every half-year, totaling 100,000 households visited during the year. The net new job opportunities are calculated based on these data.

He clarified that the announcement of the job opportunity figures for the entire year of 2025 will be made after the second half of the year ends, mentioning that the department then conducts its internal calculations, and the results will be announced at the beginning of the first month of 2026.

Concerning the calculation mechanism, Freihat explained that the survey teams visit households and ask each individual if they have obtained a job, and if they are employed, it is verified whether the job is new during the survey period or if they have been in it for a past period. If the job is old, it is excluded from the sample. If it was obtained during the same half-year, it is questioned whether the job is a substitute for previous employment or a job obtained for the first time.
