Khaberni - Many people suffer from bloating after consuming milk, especially traditional cow's milk, which can make enjoying drinks and meals difficult.
Dr. Sorab Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at Harvard University, points out that the cause is often due to lactose intolerance, the natural sugar in milk, or added sugars and thickeners in some plant-based substitutes.
Dr. Sethi categorizes common types of milk based on their likelihood to cause bloating. The worst options are sweetened cow's milk, followed by unsweetened cow's milk which is heavy on the stomach, and goat's milk which is easier to digest but not free from components that might cause discomfort.
Rice milk contains fermentable carbohydrates that increase gas, while soy milk may cause some bloating for some people. Oat milk has a moderate effect due to its content of soluble fiber.
The options least likely to cause bloating include lactose-free cow's milk, followed by low-lactose and easily digestible coconut milk, then light and low-carbohydrate almond milk, and finally cashew milk, which is the gentlest option on the stomach and provides a creamy texture without discomfort.
To reduce discomfort, it is advisable to try new types of milk gradually, avoid added sugars and thickeners, and drink milk with food rather than on an empty stomach. By choosing the right type such as cashew, almond, or lactose-free milk, it is possible to enjoy milk-based drinks and meals without feeling bloated or uncomfortable.
