Khaberni - The Chairman of the Sustainability Association for Energy, Water, and Environment, Dureid Mahasneh, said that the quantities of rain that fell during the current season exceed recent seasons, describing it as a "season of goodness" that has positively reflected on the water situation in the kingdom.
Mahasneh explained on Friday evening that the importance of the weather lows this year is due to them not being followed by significant rises in temperature, which enhances the chances of recharging the groundwater and replenishing aquifers.
He pointed out that the Al-Wehda Dam in northern Jordan provides about 35% of the kingdom's drinking water needs, noting that some other dams' water goes to agricultural uses.
Mahasneh indicated that the Al-Wehda Dam is fed from the Syrian side, stating that the previous Syrian regime had built twice the number of dams initially agreed upon in the 1987 agreement, in addition to drilling wells and establishing water excavations on the Syrian side north of the kingdom, which has affected the water supply quantities reaching the dam.
Mahasneh emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement between Jordan and Syria to stop well drilling on the Syrian side and allow for more water supply to Al-Wehda Dam, ensuring the sustainability of shared water resources.
He drew attention to the fact that Jordan possesses sufficient dams and does not need to build new ones, stressing that the water sector needs more regulation in distributing water between agriculture, drinking, and other sectors, with the necessity to regulate the agricultural sector in the Jordan Valley.
Mahasneh also called for stopping assaults on water networks, as they cause water loss and additional challenges in managing water resources.
