Iraq Surprises in the incident of a young man setting himself on fire in a live broadcast

Khaberni - The repercussions of an Iraqi youth setting fire to himself during a live Facebook broadcast continue to provoke widespread controversy and major shock among the local public opinion, while the authorities have revealed surprises in this context.

The Ninewa Provincial Police confirmed that the youth survived and is currently receiving treatment in one of the hospitals in the Kurdistan Region, with previous and subsequent judicial rulings issued against him.

According to what local media reported from a source in the provincial police, "the young man who appeared in a live broadcast setting fire to his body using a flammable fuel is from the Hamam al-Alil area south of Mosul, and the video has been deleted from Facebook."

It added that "the young man was quickly transferred to one of the hospitals in the Kurdistan Region, where he currently resides to receive the necessary treatment, and his health condition is under continuous medical monitoring," noting that "he had previously been convicted in 2021 and 2022 in drug-related cases."

It indicated that "the reason he set himself on fire is due to a recent in absentia ruling against him on charges of drug trafficking and promotion," noting that "he is one of the members of a drug trafficking network consisting of five people, all of whom were arrested except for him, as he managed to flee outside Ninewa before later appearing in the live broadcast clip."

It confirmed that "the security authorities continue to follow up on the case in coordination with the competent authorities in the region, in preparation for taking the necessary legal measures against him after his health condition stabilizes."
