Khaberni - The Iranian authorities announced the arrest of dozens of people across several provinces, among them organizers of the recent disturbances in the country.
In Gilan province (north of the country), the head of the provincial police, Hussein Hasanpour, stated that law enforcement arrested 50 people he described as "organizers of the disturbances," noting that the total number of detainees in the province exceeded 1500.
Tasnim agency quoted him saying: "The identities of all those who committed any acts of incitement to rebellion or rioting will be determined.. So far, the identities of 50 of these leaders have been identified and they have been arrested."
The public prosecutor in Khorasan province (northeast of the country) also announced the arrest of 72 people on charges of organizing. Arrests were also reported in other cities including the capital Tehran, Karaj, Rasht, and Ardabil.
The protests erupted in Iran at the end of December 2025, initially due to economic crises including the devaluation of the national currency, then expanded to include political demands. The protests peaked following calls from Reza Pahlavi, son of the former Shah of Iran.
The authorities faced the protests with stringent security measures including internet shutdowns, and the confrontations resulted in deaths among both the protesters and security forces, according to reports.
On January 12, the Iranian authorities announced that the situation had been "brought under control," and accused the United States and Israel of organizing the disturbances.
