Khaberni - A surgeon specializing in endoscopy and robotics from India warns of the risks of delaying sleep past midnight. He explained that sleeping at 1 AM could harm vital body functions.
Dr. Dinesh Singh Thakur stated to "Times of India" that the timing of sleep is just as important as its duration, pointing out that every hour of delay between 9 PM and 3 AM reduces the chances of natural healing, fat burning, and hormone balance.
He clarified that the human body goes through several stages during the night that affect health and recovery. From 9 PM to 10 PM, the body starts detoxifying and repairing cells. By 11 PM, melatonin secretion peaks, allowing deep sleep that enhances metabolism.
At midnight, growth hormone is secreted, which helps burn fat and rejuvenate the body. If a person stays awake between 1 AM and 2 AM, the detoxification process in the liver slows down, leading to accumulation. After 3 AM, sleep becomes lighter, and the body's ability to heal and restore vital functions significantly declines.
Studies have indicated that sleep deprivation for just one day increases inflammation and weakens the immune system, while insufficient sleep for a few nights increases the risk of heart problems.
To avoid these risks, Dr. Dinesh Singh Thakur offered some practical tips:
Sleep before 11 PM.
Avoid caffeine after 4 PM.
Reduce screen use one hour before sleep.
Eat foods rich in magnesium, such as bananas, nuts, spinach, and dark chocolate to improve sleep quality.
Thakur concluded by emphasizing that sleep is not a luxury but a vital necessity to maintain the health of the body and its essential functions.
