The vagus nerve extends from the brain to the colon and controls many vital involuntary functions such as digestion, heart rate, and breathing. It transmits sensory and motor information between the brain and internal organs. Scientists from a large number of international scientific institutions have developed a biodegradable implantable neural conduit used to facilitate the regeneration of the vagus nerve. The scientists state in a report published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, that when the vagus nerve connection is severed, the heart ages at a faster pace, and this conduit is designed to enhance and direct the spontaneous regeneration of the vagus nerve at the heart level, meaning it reshapes the heart and maintains its health and effective contraction over the long term. They say, this technology opens new horizons in heart and thoracic surgery, organ transplantation, and prevention of early heart aging.
