A government hospital in Shimla, India transformed into a shocking scene of violence when a widely shared video documented a fierce altercation between a doctor and a patient, sparking immense outrage among visitors and families of the patients.
The video shows Doctor Raghav Narula continuously punching patient Arjun Singh, who was lying on his bed, in a scene described by eyewitnesses as unbelievable. Singh attempted to defend himself by kicking, while others intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further. The assault resulted in the patient sustaining a broken nose, which further fueled the anger within the hospital corridors.
Hundreds of the victim’s relatives and other patients gathered, demanding the immediate arrest of the doctor. The police stepped in to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation, while the doctor was immediately suspended from work, and authorities launched an urgent inquiry to gather evidence and testimonies, and to form a disciplinary committee to look into the incident.
The patient confirmed that he was undergoing a lung exam when the doctor began the assault following a verbal dispute over being treated with respect, while the doctor denied the allegations, insisting that it was the patient who started the fight.
Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that any violence within hospitals is unacceptable, and that investigations are ongoing to punish those responsible for this shocking incident, amidst a widespread debate among the Indian community on social media about the behavior of doctors and public hospitals.
