Khaberni - Microsoft has issued an urgent warning to millions of current and former users of the "Skype" application, urging them to quickly save their data before it is permanently deleted at the beginning of the new year.
Microsoft had previously announced the official discontinuation of the app on May 5, 2025, following its decline in popularity against competing platforms like "WhatsApp" and "Zoom", and its focus on the Microsoft Teams service. Although the company provided an additional grace period for users to retrieve their messages and records, this deadline will actually expire in January 2026, which is less than two weeks from now.
The company confirmed that any data not saved or transferred to the "Teams" platform will be automatically and permanently deleted at the beginning of the year, and there will be no technical means to recover it later.
Skype’s Journey: From the Peak to the End
The launch: Skype was launched in 2003, and it reached its peak of success in the middle of the last decade, with more than 300 million active users monthly.
The acquisition: Microsoft acquired the application in 2011 in a huge deal, but it gradually started losing its luster with the boom of competing smartphone apps.
The name: The name "Skype" was derived from the original phrase Sky peer-to-peer, before it was shortened to the form known to the world.
Last Chance
Users are now faced with a last chance to save their memories and old conversation records before the page on one of the most famous communication applications that shaped the digital age for many years is closed forever.
