UNRWA Demolition Orders in Nur Shams Camp Aim to Impose LongTerm Control Over the Camps

Khaberni - The UNRWA's West Bank Director of Operations, Roland Friedrich, said that more shocking news is coming from the north of the West Bank, following the issuance of a new demolition order by the Israeli occupation forces targeting the Nur Shams camp.

Friedrich explained that the new demolition order puts about 25 buildings in the camp at imminent risk of demolition as of December 18, which will affect hundreds of Palestinian refugees who have already been forcibly displaced.

He noted that based on satellite images, nearly 48% of the total buildings in Nur Shams camp had already been damaged or destroyed even before the issuance of the latest demolition order.

Friedrich pointed out that this falls within a repeated pattern observed in the area this year, where the occupation forces destroy homes in order to impose long-term control over the camps in the northern West Bank, potentially leading to a permanent change in the geographical character of these camps.

He added that these demolitions are justified by what is called "military necessity," affirming that it does not make anyone safer.

Friedrich emphasized that the forced displacement of more than 32,000 Palestinian refugees in the north of the West Bank should not become a permanent situation, noting that the residents have been anxiously waiting for eleven months to return to their homes, but this hope is fading with each strike of the demolition bulldozers.
