Warnings of a Phone Hacking Wave Targeting a Major Arab Country

Khaberni - The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in Egypt has reiterated its warnings about what many described as a "wave" of attempts to hack mobile phones through calls.

The official spokesperson for the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Engineer Mohamed Ibrahim, stated that these attempts include all phone users in Egypt from the third to the fifth generation.

He emphasized in statements to one of the Egyptian channels the necessity of not opening any links from unknown sources, warning at the same time that some contain viruses or malicious software capable of hacking the phone or stealing personal data.

He also urged citizens not to respond to incoming calls from unknown international numbers, in addition to securing their phones through setting strong passwords for the important applications they use in their financial transactions and others.

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in Egypt had earlier this month issued warnings after an increase in complaints about unknown international calls, urging citizens through an official statement to be cautious while dealing with links, messages, and attachments, especially those that come from unknown sources or appear unusual, even if they appear as messages from known entities or companies.

The statement requested that every user be aware of modern fraud techniques, whether through messages, calls, or links, and to be vigilant for any unusual behavior on their phones, such as sudden slowness, increased data usage, or the appearance of applications that they did not install.

He confirmed that he is continuously monitoring the situation in cooperation with global companies and relevant local authorities, and is taking all necessary measures to ensure the protection of phone users in Egypt.
