Syrian Authorities Grant License to Organization Working on Restoring Jewish Properties

Khaberni - The Syrian government announced that it has granted a license to an organization concerned with preserving Jewish heritage in the country, which will work according to one of its founders to restore the properties of this community that were confiscated by the previous authorities.

The Jewish community, whose roots in Syria date back centuries before Christ, has been trying to revive its presence in Syria since the arrival of the new power in Damascus more than a year ago, which has shown flexibility towards it, according to "France Press" agency.

The Syrian Minister of Social Affairs Hind Kabawat told the agency about the "announcement of the Syrian Jewish Heritage Organization," which is the first organization concerned with Jewish heritage to obtain a license from the new authorities.

Kabawat stated, "This is a strong message from the Syrian state that we do not discriminate between one religion and another," adding that "Syria helps all Syrians from all religions and sects who want to build our new state."

Henry Hamra, one of the organization's founders and the son of Youssef Hamra, the last rabbi to leave Syria, said: "We will work on cataloging Jewish properties and restoring those confiscated during the previous regime, as well as protecting and caring for holy sites and restoring them so they can be accessible for visits by all Jews worldwide."

Hamra, who resides in the United States, participated in February last year in the first visit of a Jewish delegation to Syria with his father.

The executive director of the Syrian Emergency Organization, Muaz Mustafa, said: "There are dozens of houses that we have cataloged so far from Jewish properties that were robbed from them by the defunct Bashar al-Assad regime."
