Trump Endorses a Palestinian Candidate for President of Honduras

Khaberni - US President Donald Trump expressed his support for the conservative National Party's candidate for the presidential elections in Honduras, the former mayor of the country's capital, Nasry Asfura, also known as Tito Asfura.

Trump wrote in a post on the social media site "Truth Social" on Wednesday that the elections scheduled for November 30 will be a "test of democracy" for Honduras.

Trump described Tito Asfura as "the man who stands by democracy and fights (Venezuelan President) Maduro."

Trump predicted that "the smart people in Honduras" would reject Asfura's leftist competitor, former Defense Minister Rixi Moncada, whom Trump called a "communist" admirer of Fidel Castro.

Trump also denounced the third candidate, Salvador Nasralla, saying he "is not a friend of freedom" and "he pretends to be anti-communist in order to draw votes away from Asfura."

Trump added, "The only real friend of freedom in Honduras is Tito Asfura. Tito and I can work together to fight the communist drug traffickers and bring the aid that the people of Honduras need."

He continued: "I cannot work with Moncada and the communists, and Nasrallah is not a reliable partner for freedom," adding, "I hope that the people of Honduras will vote for freedom and democracy and elect Tito Asfura as president."

It should be noted that Tito Asfura (67 years old), leader of the conservative National Party, is a politician of Palestinian origin. His family immigrated to Latin America in the 1940s.

Asfura was the mayor of the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa from 2014 to 2022.

Polls show close results for the three presidential candidates. Observers expect potential tensions in the country, as none of the candidates is likely to achieve a sweeping victory, and there may be allegations of election rigging and irregularities, as was the case during the 2017 elections.

Asfura had previously run for president in the 2021 elections but lost to the leftist candidate Xiomara Castro.
