Khaberni - The General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Syria has followed up on the inaccurate news circulated on some social media pages and platforms regarding the discovery of a cave filled with large quantities of historic gold in the area of Al-Hara in rural Daraa, confirming that this information is completely untrue.
The Directorate clarified that a field inspection conducted by their specialized team at the site revealed what was found to be nothing more than an archaeological tomb dating back to the Roman period, which appeared during excavation for the foundations of a building, and is not related to the claims circulated about a “golden cave”.
The directorate added that fieldwork resulted in the discovery of several pottery finds from the same period, which are of usual scientific and museum value at such sites, confirming that no amounts of archaeological gold were found as had been promoted through some platforms.
The relevant security authorities have secured the area, while the directorate continues the necessary archaeological documentation and studies for the site and the discovered artifacts according to accredited scientific standards.
The Directorate concluded its statement by affirming that the Syrian cultural heritage is a national treasure that must be preserved according to precise scientific methodology, and that any real archaeological discovery will be announced openly through the Directorate's official channels only.
