A Drop of It Causes a Disaster US Aviation Bans Commonly Used Medical Device

Khaberni - The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration announced a complete ban on transporting mercury thermometers on flights after proving the ability of mercury to weaken the aluminum used in aircraft manufacturing.

The decision includes both carry-on and checked luggage, as well as scientific devices that rely on mercury such as certain types of barometers.

Material experts explained that mercury attacks the oxide layer that protects the aluminum, paving the way for a chemical reaction known as amalgam corrosion.

This reaction leads to the metal disintegrating and becoming brittle within a short period, especially in the humid environments found inside the cabin or luggage containers.

Air safety specialists indicate that the presence of a tiny drop of mercury can allow the reaction to spread to broader parts of the structure, including areas connected by screws or metal joints, which makes the damage expandable despite the limited amount leaked.

The Federal Aviation Administration adopted this decision as part of its preventive policy aimed at preventing any potential sources of harm before they occur, confirming that digital or alcohol-based alternatives perform the same function without any risks to the aircraft.

The aviation industry worldwide uses almost the same rules, as bodies like the International Civil Aviation Organization and the European Aviation Safety Agency adopt the same measures to maintain the safety of aircraft and passengers.

The authorities advised travelers to avoid carrying any tools containing mercury during travel, and to settle for the safe options available in the market.
