Khaberni - Teenager Zachary Miron (15 years old) in Quebec died during a school trip after consuming a can of Red Bull energy drink, as it caused a reaction with medication he was taking for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) leading to a fatal heart rhythm disorder.
Following the incident, the victim's parents called for stricter regulations on these products, stating that the beverages are easily accessible and appealing to teenagers, thus posing a real health risk. They also launched a petition that has gathered about 15,000 signatures demanding a ban on their sale to minors.
In this context, the Quebec Minister of Health, Sonia Belanger, held a meeting with the family, expressing her willingness to consider legislative measures, including banning the sale of energy drinks to those under 16 or 18 years old, and initiating an official discussion on the appropriate age for enacting laws to protect youth.
The minister confirmed that the government would take action in the coming period, while the family emphasized that the goal is to prevent the tragedy from recurring and to turn the case into a step towards protecting the lives of teenagers. View less
