A Jordanian court issued a ruling requiring a municipality to pay financial compensation to a Jordanian citizen who was bitten and mauled by a stray dog.
The decision -subject to appeal and objection by both the plaintiff and the defendants- came after it was proven that the municipality was negligent in its duties related to monitoring stray dogs, according to Khaberni website.
The decision, details of which were reviewed by Khaberni, stated that the citizen was injured by a stray dog, affirming that one of the major responsibilities of the municipalities is to maintain public health and take necessary actions to monitor stray dogs.
The decision pointed out that the existing laws entrusted the local council and municipalities with the task of reducing the dangers of stray dogs by monitoring, disposing, and preventing them.
Accordingly, Khaberni sources indicated, the court decided to obligate the municipality to pay an amount of 600 dinars to the plaintiff for moral damages, and to include the municipality for the fees, expenses, and attorney fees amounting to 154 dinars, plus the legal interest at a rate of 9% from the date of the claim until full payment, noting that the judgement was issued in absentia against the municipality and is appealable by the plaintiff and objectionable by the defendants.
