WhatsApp officially closes in on supporting external app conversations in Europe

Khaberni - Meta, the owner of the WhatsApp app, announced that it is about to launch WhatsApp integration with external messaging applications in Europe, which is required by the European Digital Markets Act.

Meta stated in a statement on Friday that it would launch this integration "in the coming months" while maintaining end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp.

The company added that "BirdyChat" and "Haiket" will be the first third-party services to implement interoperable messaging with WhatsApp.

WhatsApp users in Europe will see a notification in the settings tab explaining how to activate the messaging service from external applications.

This service will work on WhatsApp for "iOS" and "Android" systems, but it will not work on computers, web, or tablets.

Meta said that "third-party messaging applications must use the same end-to-end encryption level used in WhatsApp", and Meta will not be able to see the encrypted messages during their transit.

The content of these messages can include texts, images, video clips, voice messages, and documents.

The incoming messages from external applications will appear in a separate section from the regular chat screen on WhatsApp.

This will only work for users who have a WhatsApp account registered with phone numbers in the regions covered by the Digital Markets Act.
