Khaberni - The Pakistani newspaper Dawn, the oldest English-speaking newspaper in the country, sparked a wide wave of criticism after it published a paragraph entirely written by artificial intelligence within an economic report without detecting it before printing.
The newspaper published in its November 12 issue a report titled "Auto sales rev up in October" about car sales in Pakistan.
The report started in a traditional journalistic manner, but the last paragraph was generated by the artificial intelligence application "ChatGPT," and it stated in Arabic: "If you wish, I can also prepare a more attractive version in the style of the front page, including concise and powerful statistics, and a design ready to be used as an infographic to maximize impact on the readers.. Do you want me to do that?"
Readers quickly noticed the error, leading to a wave of mockery and sharp criticisms directed at the newspaper concerning the lack of editorial scrutiny and "misuse of artificial intelligence tools" in preparing journalistic materials.
One user on platform X said: "It's a scandal for the print press and for a newspaper like Dawn, which has an excellent reputation."
In another comment, someone wrote: "Imagine lecturing others about media ethics while publishing articles written by artificial intelligence without disclosing it.. The mask has fallen, and hypocrisy has been exposed."
Meanwhile, the newspaper quickly edited the report in its next issue and deleted the controversial paragraph, before issuing an official apology in which it confirmed that the article "was edited using artificial intelligence, in violation of the newspaper's current policy on artificial intelligence tools."
It is noted that Dawn is one of the oldest and most important newspapers in South Asia, founded by Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1941, while its first issue was published on October 12, 1942.
