Khaberni - Education and Higher Education Minister Dr. Azmi Governor criticized the universities' "obsession" with global indicators for university ranking, which are issued periodically and carry specific criteria for the best universities globally.
Governor added during an interview on "Sky News Arabia" that these rankings only make sense if the level of universities is improved.
He continued: Unfortunately, the world has started to invest in rankings and there are new indicators suggesting that these rankings conflict with the general interest of universities.
Governor pointed out that scientific research is costly but yields very important results, and referred to the limited spending on scientific research in the Arab world, making it difficult to compare with what is done in global universities.
The minister mentioned that the Arab collective work in scientific research has not been encouraging, and that talking about a council that brings together Arab states and drafts policies for scientific research is not encouraging and does not inspire optimism.
