The Security Council Lifts Sanctions on the Syrian President and Minister of the Interior

Khaberni - The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution - presented by the United States of America - to remove the name Ahmad al-Shar` from the sanctions list imposed on the ISIS and Al-Qaeda organizations.

As stated in the text of the resolution, the Security Council - under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations - decided to delist Ahmad al-Shar`, listed on the sanctions list imposed on what is called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and the Al-Qaeda organization by the name Ahmad Hussein al-Shar`, and Anas Hassan Khattab from the sanctions list imposed on the ISIS and Al-Qaeda organizations.

The Council reaffirmed its strong commitment to the full respect of the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity of Syria, and its continued support for its people.

It indicated its intention to enhance the reconstruction, stability, and economic development of Syria in the long term, emphasizing that these efforts should be consistent with the integrity and effectiveness of the sanctions regime imposed on the ISIS and Al-Qaeda organizations.

The resolution welcomed Syria's commitments to ensuring the full, safe, rapid, and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid in accordance with international humanitarian law; and counter-terrorism.

It referred to the expectations that Syria will take robust measures:

To address the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters, and to protect the human rights of all Syrians and their safety and security regardless of race or religion, combat drug trafficking, promote transitional justice, non-proliferation and eliminate any remnants of chemical weapons, achieve regional security and stability, and establish a comprehensive political process led and owned by Syrians.
